John Deere Waterloo Works recently changed from a 13-digit large tractor serial number to a 17-digit serial number. To better understand each position in the 17-digital serial number, the chart below lists the position number, use of that position and what the position means, specific to large tractors (7030 Series Large-Frame, 8R/8RT Series and 9030 Series Tractors). Lookup vehicle identification number is the first thing you should do before you buy a used car. Get Vehicle History Report Vindecoder.eu can decode make, model, model year, body, trim, engine, transmission and other car parts in Europe, US as well as on other markets. Deere & Company is a global manufacturer of farm machinery based in the United States. Deere entered the tractor manufacturing business in 1918 with the purchase of the purchase of the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1963, Deere became the largest tractor manufacturer in the world.
Here are the serial numbers, by year, for the JD450 through JD450G models.
JD450 Straight
1965 10001 - 16159
1966 16160 - 42766
1967 42767 - 64999
1968 65000 - 82275
1969 82276 - 102143
1970 102144 - 117587
JD450B
1970 117588 - 121123
1971 121124 - 138713
1972 138714 - 142294
1973 142295 - 164046
1974 164047 - 185798
1975 185799 - 207555
1976 207556 - ?
There is an overlap in 1975 thru 1976 where JD450B and 450C models were made concurrently. We do not know the exact serial number of the last JD450B as a result.
The main differences between the JD450B and JD450C are that the C went to a 4/219 CID Turbocharged engine from the 4/219 CID normally aspirated engine in the JD450B. Also, the JD450C changed from dry to wet steering clutches.
However, there are some late JD450B's out there with wet steering clutches. The JD450B units were produced along with the JD450C until the demand for the non-turbo engine dropped off. The JD450B units changed over to the wet steering clutches used in the JD450C when the stock of dry-type steering clutch parts was depleted.
JD450C
1974 191829 - 219515
1975 219516 - 240367
1976 240368 - 261217
1977 261218 - 287194
1978 287195 - 313947
1979 313948 - 340909
1980 340910 - 355420
1981 355421 - 372281
1982 372282 - 389142
1983 389143 - ?
Again, we have an overlap between the JD450C and the JD450D. The power went up all of 3 HP, so I really don't know why there was an overlap this time.
This makes little sense to me, actually. The serial number list says that the JD450D started in 1982 just past the serial number shown for the start of the JD450C 1983 production. In 1984, the serial numbers jump to 700010, and I can't believe Deere made a couple hundred thousand 450D's in 1982!
JD450D
1982 389172 - ?
1983 700010 - 703984
1984 703985 - 711936
1985 711937 - End (probably 715503)
JD450E
1985 715504 - 725999
1986 726000 - 733269
1987 733270 - 741668
1988 741669 - ?
Here we go again with another overlap. Just go with it, figuring on the usual reason of exhausting some factory parts stock in what is called a 'running change'.
JD450G
1987 736319 - 742813
1988 742814 - 755244
1989 755245 - 765933
1990 765934 - 771515
1991 771516 - 776121
1992 776122 - 784948
1993 784949 - 789485
1994 789485 - 805221
1995 805221 - End
Note that there's no JD450F. That's a savvy marketing idea. Who wants to buy an 'F' in anything??
The source of the data is from a farm equipment quick reference guide that's intended to assist dealers in determining the year and current market value of trade-in equipment.
The guide as such only lists the beginning serial number for each year. I'm making the reasonable presumption that the last serial number for any given year is one less than the starting serial number for the successive year.
Thanks to Digitup for sharing the relevent pages from his guide with us so we can determine what year a given machine is.
